EG Tri Race report by Andy Peel of East Grinstead Tri Club:

"East Grinstead Triathlon Club was blessed with unseasonably good weather as Royal Marine’s
sportsman of the year, Charles Pennington, dominated the men’s race by posting the fastest swim,
bike and run splits getting round in just under 1 hour 6 minutes beating clubmates from South
London Harriers Matt Chapman ( 2nd) and Jim Burdett (3rd).

The same 500m swim, 26k bike and 5k run were covered by winner of the Ladies’ race, Beckie
Woodland, in 1hour 17 minutes following a storming run leg. Victora Kenny posted the fastest swim
split for second overall, with Sarah Lovelock coming in 3rd.

Over 140 racers were taking part in their very first triathlon, including a number in the ladies’ novice
event. Winner this race was Rachel Way in 46 minutes. Carolyn Markham did very well to come
second considering she had only ridden her bike twice in the past 20 years. Francine Davies of
Ashurst Wood came in 3rd raising money for Sussex Search and Rescue in the process.

Notable local performances came in the shape of Frances Ludman of Forest Row who won the Ladies
Over 60 race. Eddie Wright, who did the first ever East Grinstead Tri 27 years ago claimed 3 rd male
over 60 and fellow East Grinstead resident Graham Chadwick came 6th in the same category in his
first ever race. East Grinstead Tri Club member, Simon Neave was 6th in the over 50’s.

One competitor seemed determined to add an extra challenge by doing a second bike lap until quick
witted marshals stepped in to show him the way.

Club Chairman Richard Merry and Race Director Pete Holley reflected on another successful race and
passed on their wholehearted thanks to the Kings Centre and local residents for accommodating this
highly regarded race."

The Deal Tri - Half Marathon

Basically - it was a lot warmer and better than the weather last February when compacted ice and snow on one corner was just about manageable - but then it started snowing even more and you just couldn't tell where it was. As good a reason as any to cancel. Plus it was very cold and wouldn't have been that much fun !

This time with better weather (how lucky were we with the weekend and no rain!) the sun did shine on the course and Gareth Robb from Paddock Wood decided that a hilly 1:16:46.35 was a good idea to win. His Team mate Tina Oldershaw won the womens race in 1:24:04 which again was also good enough to be 10th overall.

Well done to Jo and Jill on reorganising the whole race and getting it all sorted again - and unlucky to everyone who entered that couldn't make the re-run - it looks like you missed a cracker of a run around the Kent countryside !

The Oxford Town and Gown 10k - organised by Muscular Dystrophy

With Christine Hamilton setting off both races and presenting the prizes, the Muscular Dystrophy Town and Gown 10k run went of with a massive 2361 entries completing the course. On a perfect day for a 10k the town went orange with the official Tshirts and lots of balloons and banners about the place.

Adeo Weliy won the race in 29:27 - in his first race in the UK since arriving from Ethiopia earlier in the week on a graded performance rating of 91.23 - which is international standard. Sophie Carter winning the ladies race in 37:11 - a respectable 30th place overall and an age grading of 81.94
