Worthing Tri now live

Sunday Morning. Eleven minutes past seven, and the otherwise flat calm waters of the English Channel got a bit churned up by about 300 of this countries finest trying their hand at the 2009 Worthing Triathlon.
Eleven minutes earlier the ladies had started off in the staggered start - which by all intentions should have produced a dead heat at the finish between the first man and woman if last years performances were anything to go by.

Starting off from the jetty just off the Goring lawns near the yatch club the 1500m swim went West first and then back against the current. Ladies first - and the men watched their start as they all swam to the first bouy getting dragged off course and having to re-adjust for the current - this probably saved the leading men a few minutes over the ladies.

Strong crowd support along the swim exit path and it was off for the cycle ride up to Furlong Gap and the A24 beckoned at the roundabout for Findon, after Triss had taken your bike portraits.

A particularly scenic bit of wiggly road to wizz down: Which Nikki Treacy did in a course record:

No 61 probably had a feeling he was being followed:

Entry into T2 was a close affair, with Nikki first back, Colin Dixon second and Sarah Wigmore, third - it wasn't a moment for a cup of tea and a chin-wag on the finer technicalities of the bike course, and Colin set off in chase of Nikki with Sarah only some 30 meters behind.

First back after the 10k was Colin Dixon making it three years in a row for him at Worthing, and first time win for Sarah Wigmore - who to be honest I've never seen a more gutsy performance from in all the years I've been watching her athletic career. Absolutely fantastic. With Yvette Grice closing down the gap fast it was a true race to the end and with the multi-lap run course ensuring that everyone knew their was a real race on the cards !
