On a day considerably drier and warmer than last year the 2010 London to Brighton Veteran Car run took place last Sunday. With the nice autumnal start from dawn in Hyde Park, the 450 or so starters got going on their annual endurance trial.
If you post-process the images enough, you can almost get to what it might have looked like back in 1894 - here's a colourised gel styled image
and then a sepia toned shot, which all gets a bit evocative, especially when the modern cars are not in the background. The only modern day clues are the road lines.
A good mix of young and old get involved every year. I do worry sometimes about the cars with all their three generations of family on board.
The goal of course is just to finish before sunset, which was at 4:30pm this year.
The first car over the line was the Sunbeam. Not just any old sunbeam, THE Sunbeam. ("1903 Sunbeam 10/12hp Four-cylinder Rear-entrance Tonneau, Chassis no. 183 Engine no. 131 sold for £291,000") which was sold in the auction on the Friday. Technically the most expensive British built car ever sold. Apparently. This is what it looks like, but the new owner didn't want to risk driving it. Can't blame him, the insurance must have cost a ton.
Otherwise crossing the finish line is the whole point of the exercise.
And finishing is what it's all about. Apart from the taking part of course.
We now have over 7 years of searchable archives from 2004 online that can be viewed on the gallery. They often get used to prove if cars did actually make it to the finish, and I'm told that can add value to them. I'll have to have a look to see if the Sunbeam has made it in past years...
