Race started under the massive arch |
Just over 1290 runners started the race on Sunday at 11am, as the temperatures grew steadily towards 28degC, and the suntan lotion was passed around. One spectator watched from a window behind the start - only topless, I hope.
A full road and pavements used to get away from the start quickly |
There were a full set of road closures to make space for everyone on the 13.1 mile course.
The race director managed a smile whilst the runners were out on the course |
First time nerves were understandable for everyone from the organisers to the runners.
Official finish line duties carried out highly efficiently |
Tony Lambert from Winchester set the course record at 1:12:31 |
Excellent support from the crowd at the finish |
A wide finish straight gave space for overtaking to the line |

5th place Fiona Mattheson from Falkirk Victoria Harriers set the female course record at 1:21:45 |
Hot sunny weather is often overlooked as a problem, but as a blessing for many races, however for a half marathon with peak summer temperatures on Sunday plenty of people took precautions to ensure they were hyrdrated and sensible on the day.
Well done to everyone on coping with the heat and the support services who were called in to help the few that suffered the most, I hope they have got better by now.
Congratulations to everyone at the Destination Basingstoke team who co-ordinated everything and for such a great first time event, I look forwards to next years !
