Sunny days !
Well, that's the last weekend of the summer holidays before the kids go back to school - so a good weekend for two excellent triathlons that are both designed as beginner friendly - as well as offering some great competition for the more accomplished.
The Tri-Together race organised by Leonard Cheshire Disability takes place at Crystal Palace, it is an inclusive triathlon that attracts a lot of first time triathletes. With the swim in the warm-up pool, then 6 laps of the park around the park, followed by a 5 lap run loop that finishes in the main track arena, used until recently for the main Athletics Diamond league meetings. In its third year - having won triathlon of the year in 2012 (from 220 tri mag) it's a great race and one for your calendar next year !
The 25th Newbury triathlon, organised by local tri club Team Kennet takes place in the 75m long outdoor lido, making for some great support up and down the 4 lengths to make 300m, then a bike ride to the north of Newbury, and then a run along the Kennet and Avon Canal to finish - it couldn't get more scenic.
Both events were expertly organised and went of very smoothly. The team work from all the marshals at Newbury was something else to behold - a great team effort from Team Kennet.
Be aware
With the start of the autumn marathon and half marathon season starting - the recent results of the inquest of Sam Brighouse aged just 23 at the Brighton Marathon earlier this year makes for some sad, but informative findings:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/athletics/10276459/Marathon-runner-died-after-taking-sports-supplements-and-ibuprofen.html
Whilst it wasn't the ibruprofen on it's own cited in the inquest - I've been warned by many of my Doctor friends not to take ibruprofen as an anti-inflammatory anyway for any longer races from Half marathons upwards - as they restrict the ability of the kidneys to process blood - and this is advice I can only pass on and hope you are all aware of. I really need to get my friend Ruth who is a Renal (kidney) expert to write a bit about it, she does a zillion marathons a year so I would hope she could put something together or refer us to something worthwhile that will help everyone in the running community understand the effects more.
I will continue to watch the newspapers for informative articles on this - feel free to comment or email me with links and information that may be of help to others.
So hopefully we will see you at a few of these races over the next few weeks - don't forget to share them with your friends and get in before they fill up - nothing more annoying than missing out on a race because you tried to enter it too late!
