UK Athletics Rules - http://www.britishathletics.org.uk/competitions/rules/
Whatever sport you participate in at any level, it's always worth a read of the official rules at the start of the season - they change more often than you would imagine, and whilst sports like Rugby Union tinker all the time because basically every scrum and lineout is technically illegal, and entertainment like football don't because it's the ambiguity and weakness of the rules that keep the media machine running on it (that's why it's called entertainment and not a sport), you may be surprised to find that the rules of running (yes they exist) have changed recently.
Here's two interesting ones for you
Firstly on the track event side - this might stop a few officials getting aluminium tubes thrown at them by tired runners that have just lost to Jamaica, or not...
"169 (Relays) adds the rule that the baton must be handed back to the official."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG0RsLrzE1Y
And the other rule for you to know about is that Headphones are now banned by the way on open traffic road race routes
"Rule 240 (Road Races) has UKA supplement additions around issues like the course, refreshments and classification of the race, etc. Amendments are the addition of a rule (240 S4) stopping the use of headphones on single carriageway roads open to traffic and allowing more entries in road relay races in excess of 8 stages (240 S4)."
If anyone has borne witness to the driving at some of the races we attend which have open roads (which is most of them to be honest), you'll know what sort of thing happens. I'm on record of being in favour of being able to hear what is going on around you when you run - mainly to avoid being run over by ambulances or indeed having us take photos of you as you are http://www.run247.com/articles/article-1172-take-out-that-mp3-and-listen%21.html and avoiding ending up being in one too (a generally favourable occupation).
What is the solution for all those people who "can't run without my music" ?
Aftershokz Bone conduction speakers are designed to let the outside sound get through - because they don't plug your ears - http://amzn.to/1rR1eQa and I'm told that UK Athletics has cleared their use, and certain races that ban headphones don't ban bone conduction speakers.
Practically though - Exactly how you stop a rule applying marshal from being able to tell the difference as you close in at full racing pace - I don't quite know - it's a bit like kids with realistic toy guns - the security guys at airports don't take any risks.
I suppose that is where our photos can be of use - evidence that you were not wearing ear-plugging headphones when you come to dispute your race DQ with the event organiser!
It's always nice to be able to provide a service, but you will need the high resolution image to be able to prove it if you do...
EG Tri 2016
We had the best conditions in living memory for this years EgTri - blue skies, almost no wind, and that was at 7am when the first swimmers went in it was already about 17degC. I was almost tempted to give it a try... Excellent work from the EGTri team once again and well done to all of you who completed it !

always good to see dynamic cornering |
Smiling - because it wasn't freezing or raining, it was quite nice really |
You can surrender at the finish, just not before |
wave your hands in the air like you don't care |
not going quite to plan |
beaten the course |
Cheer up ! |
are we in France yet ? no, your on the wrong side of the road, and across a chevron marking with broken border, which you should not enter or cross. http://www.highwaycode.info/rule/130 |
That's a very very pointy helmet.... |
Some very pretty but shady parts of the course |
coming in 2nd overall on the run leg element, Helen clearly enjoyed this bit |
all going well at 2 miles in |
Excellent run by Andrew for the win in 1:25:51 |
Does this count as testosterone doping during a race ? |
just be careful backing away for the shot, the cliff is behind you |
All going up and well here |
not going so well for some |
double joy as the finish comes into sight |
The detail is always in the background. |
It all looked so fantastic when the race started, although someone was lost from Southampton |
double fist pump |
Well done Andrew and Emma on the wins |
proper competitive running |
The woman behind had allegedly just taken off her hat and top, but we will never know for sure... |
Future Race bookings for you
Right that's it for tonight, i've just fallen asleep and dribbled on the keyboard, so probably time to call it a night at 2:30. Remember the survey on what you want is still open - seems the rants are getting a bit more of a vote at the moment - so don't forget to add your weight to it.
Until next time,
Anthony
